Cyclone Pam 3/17

It seems that reality is beginning to sink in for many here. Ni-Vans live day-to-day, and there's a lot to be said for that, and so in the first few days of aftermath they were quite content, even happy, because they could easily piece together their houses and pick fruit and vegetables up off the ground. Life was good. They are beginning to think beyond tomorrow into next week and next month, realizing that their gardens have been destroyed and that there will be no produce for sale in the markets for some time. We are reassuring them that God will provide, but sometimes living on faith is hard.
It is a testimony to this culture that there has been very little looting or foul behavior in the face of a dire situation. We've been grateful for the way things have gone the past few days, and pray that neighborliness and kindness will continue.
Sadly, still little to no news out of Ambae (north east), the Shepherd Islands (just north of Efate), or Tanna (down south). We try not to worry but our hearts will be heavy until we hear something from our loved ones in these and other places.
We ask for your prayers as we really get to work on the longterm relief effort. The first few days were easy because it was pure crisis mode ... just make sure everyone has a meal in their belly and a roof on their head. There are so many needs, and frankly so many different aid efforts (all fairly independent of one another), that it can all make your head spin.
Thanks again for all the encouragement, love, and prayers! ~E
